It’s a Vegan Revolution! Veganism Given a Positive Turn in the Media

Veggie StirfryIn scanning the news the last couple of days, I’ve noticed an upsurge in positive stories about veganism, from a variety of mainstream sources and addressing different angles. Here are just a few:

Dr. Peter Singer, bioethicist and author of books such as Animal Liberation and The Way We Eat, just did a commentary about the “food crisis solution” on NPR’s Marketplace.

ESPN just did a nice feature about professional vegan athletes (all male, of course). A sidebar includes some suggested reading.

UK’s Telegraph (and several other papers) reported on a new study (by Dr. Dean Ornish), showing that “a vegan low fat diet combined with yoga and exercise can help fight prostate cancer.”

Last night on Morgan Spurlock’s show 30 Days, (Spurlock is of Supersize Me fame), a hunter, George Snedeker, spent 30 days living with Melissa Karpel, vegan and PETA’s campaign coordinator. The pairing has been a topic of curiosity for many.

And, about a week ago, CNN ran a “Vegan Revolution” story, which focused on the smaller carbon footprint of a plant-based diet (versus a meat-centered one), and included an interview with “hip-hop pioneer” Russell Simmons. (Thanks, Food Fight, for the heads up about this one.)

It’s great to see some positive coverage!

  1. Yeah! Viva la Vegan Revolution!!! Positive press is always better than what most people typically get: tree-hugging new age hippies (not to say that type is a bad thing).. but with more positive press, maybe omni’s won’t ask so many stupid questions of vegans..

  2. Thanks for visiting! I think it’s great that veganism is becoming a bigger part of mainstream consciousness, and that more high-profile people are speaking out for their compassionate values. One step at a time…..
